Flow of Cerebrospinal fluid

  1. Production
    • Normal volume 150mls; ~500mls produced/day
    • Sites: (1) Choroid plexus - 70% (2) Blood vessels lining ventricular walls - 30%
  2. Circulation
    • Lateral ventricles
    • > Interventricular foramen of Munro into 3rd ventricle
    • > Aqueduct of Silvius to 4th ventricle
    • > (1) Central canal via 4th ventricle (2) > Central foramen of Magendie and Lateral foramen of Luschka to subarachnoid space
  3. Absorption
    • Sites (1) Arachoid villi - 80% (2) Spinal nerve roots - 20%
